Teen and young adult fiction

In My Father's Shadow

Picture
"Fifteen is a challenging age for a boy, and Joshua is coming to terms with his identity, his friendships, his sexuality and his faith, while he also deals with his parents’ separation and his father’s illness.

A chance encounter on his uncle’s farm with a stranger his own age starts Josh on a journey to unravel a dark family secret, a journey that opens the complex and sometimes tragic adult world into which he is growing."

The inspiration for the novel came from multiple sources:
- several friends who have faced the challenge of non-binary sexuality and gender issues in our community
- working with students in a religion-based school
- a news item regarding unsolved murders in South Australia
- my background as a country kid

Caught in the Headlights

Picture
"For Adam Schilling, fifteen is an age of change. His childhood is brought abruptly to a close when, with his friends, he discovers a skeleton in an abandoned well, and stumbles upon a dangerous secret hidden in the bushland near their farms. With puzzles to solve, and a growing fascination with Megan, the new girl at school, Adam learns that life is neither black nor white but grey, and always in transition."

Set in country South Australia in the 1990s, Caught in the Headlights

The inspiration for Caught in the Headlights came from two key sources:
- my own teen experiences as a country kid

- a news report that a cannabis plantation was found in the area where I grew up.

Joy Ride

Picture
"When your world falls apart through no fault of your own, what can you do? And who understands anyway? Sometimes anger doesn’t make sense. You’re just angry. And you have to get it out of you. Somehow.

Scott wakes one morning to find he no longer has the family he thought he had. His whole world changes and he hates it. And no-one understands. Except Jason.

This is Scott’s story of the year and events that changed him. Forever."

Set in the mid 1990s in Adelaide, South Australia, the inspiration for Joy Ride came from multiple sources:
- students with broken families who I worked with as a teacher and counsellor
- multiple news stories around youth crime in the 1990s
- a real incident where two kids stole a bus and headed up the freeway

I wanted to give a voice to kids whose lives are messed up by the selfish actions of their parents. Too many times, I heard parents say, 'It's between us. But the kids will be alright,' when in fact the kids are seldom alright, especially if they are caught in marriage breakups in their early teens when they are struggling with their own transition from childhood to young adulthood and need stability and security. Sadly, after writing his book, my kids went through the same tragedy.

The Need

Picture
"The need to drive a hot car, to go fast, is strong in many boys and men, and Jase lives in a family with a history of fast cars, from speedway midgets to V8 Supercars and drifting. However, fulfilling dreams often comes at a cost. When Jase steps unwillingly into the darker side of the car world, he is forced to decide between what he really wants and what is right to do."

The inspiration for The Need was from several sources:
- my family background in cars and speedway
- a passion for fast cars
- a desire to write a book for boys that explored the love for cars
- research at the time into the car theft industry

- ethics and family
